How To Choose A Tax Professional (What You Want To Know Wednesdays)

2018 is beginning with a total tax reform; do you know what that means for your income and taxes? Familiarize yourself with the new tax reform so you can make educated decisions with your money and taxes this year. Taxes seem to creep up on taxpayers every year. One day it is the start of a new year, and then it is suddenly April 15th and your taxes are due.  Get a jump-start on your taxes this year to alleviate some stress.  Though taxes can easily be done via computer software such as TurboTax, it is never a bad idea to consult a tax professional. Here are some tips on choosing the right consultant:

Check the Preparer’s Qualifications – The IRS provides a tool where you can search potential tax consultants.

Check the Preparer’s History – The Better Business Bureau can help you find out if your consultant has had disciplinary action taken against them.

Ask About Service Fees – Some preparer’s may charge a percentage of your return as opposed to a flat fee.

Ask to E-File – This is the quickest way to get your return.

Ensure the Preparer Signs and Includes their PTIN – All paid tax preparers must have a Preparer Tax Identification Number, by law.

Ask Questions – If you do not understand something, ask! It is very important that you understand what is being done with your taxes.

Review before signing – ALWAYS read a document before you sign it.

Never Sign a Blank Return -  You should not use a tax preparer who asks you to do this.

Make Sure the Preparer is Available – You may want to speak with your tax consultant before April; make sure they are not working on your taxes last minute.

Report Abusive Tax Practices to the IRS – If you feel that your tax preparer is dishonest or committing fraud, report them.
